Time Management and My Life as a Student: How I Did It

I Was A Student For Many More Years Than I Care To Admit.

It can take significantly longer than normal if you: change majors a few times, don’t always attend full-time, following undergraduate graduation take a year to take graduate classes to see what may interest you, and finally decide on a graduate program in which you’re a nontraditional student thereby automatically earning you an extra year in “core” coursework.

Yep…The Years Can Really Add Up,

But, then again, so can the knowledge and experience. And those are two things I was great at…being a student and learning.

I earned my Bachelor’s Degree with a 3.98 GPA and my Master’s with a 3.88. The only reason I point that out is because that took some serious studying and to be able to have that time available for studying took some serious time management.

What Time Savers I Drew On?

There were several that I either already possessed or quickly uncovered that helped me succeed.

First, having been a single parent of 4 for many years I was already a time management expert. I’m talking like 10th degree apron belt here.

Second, I had the best behaved children in the world. Now that was a lot of work but so worth it.

Third, my children had always had chores so everything wasn’t on my shoulders.

Fourth, I taught the kids early to cook. So, if I had to study I simply told them (well in advance) they were Chef-for-the-night and they planned what they wanted to cook including making their ingredient list and making sure we either had what they needed or the items were put on the weekly grocery list.

Fifth, while this may not seem a time saver at first if you’ll follow my reasoning you’ll see it actually is a very big one. I really got to know myself. I had to learn, and quickly, what worked for me and what didn’t. What pushed me forward and what held me back. What energized me and what drained me.

However, None of These Things Were Overnight Endeavors

I’m sorry to tell you but all of these not only took work but they were processes. If you’ll look up the word “process” in a thesaurus you’ll see equivalent words such as: procedure, course, development, progression, method, practice, manner, and activity. In other words, something that’s ongoing…as in takes years and years and years.

So That’s a Quick Synopsis of Time Management and My Life as a Student.
